Is a dog that is Trained to help someone that is Legally Disabled and the dog must preform a task for them. The handler has public access right with a Service Dog and they are protected under Federal ADA Law, and are allowed access to public property with their Service Dog.

Are they even allowed in Restaurants?

Yes, but that doesn't mean they can eat at the table.

What kind of animals are allowed?

The ADA Law stipulates dogs only. They can be any breed or size. Municipalities cannot ban specific breeds.

Dose the animal have to be Leashed or Restrained?

Yes, unless it interferes with the task the dog has been trained to perform.

Are they pets?

By the Law they are not pets.

Legal Standing?

Universal access regulated under the ADA, FHA and IDEA/Section 504.

Service Dogs

Can I ask is the  Service Dog legitimate?

No- it against the law!

Legally, the handler can only be asked 2 questions about their relationship with the dog:

1) Dose your dog provide a service?

2) What is your dog trained to do?

Are they legally allowed here?

Yes, if it's any place the public is allowed, at no added cost, as per the ADA Law.

(only religious institution are exempt)

What if they are Misbehaving?

The Law stipulates that a service dog must not cause a disruption in public.

The dog must be under  the handler's control at all times. Otherwise it can be legally removed from an establishment.

Can I pet them?

Not really! They are working and by distracting them you could put their handler in jeopardy. Best way is to read the vest that is the kind way each handler tells you how they feel about their dos being pet or not.

Certification or identification required?

Their is no national registry but if the person really needs a Service Dog they will have a vest with patches on it and a badge will the ADA Law and # that public can call to hear Service dog laws. 

Have they been Specially Trained?

Yes, they have been extensively trained to perform specific Service for their disabled owner/handler.

Subject to normal Licensing & Vaccination rules?

Yes

DO some people Lie about  their assistance animal's status?

Yes , though misrepresentation is punishable by law.
